- About James Ermacora
James Ermacora was born in Detroit, Michigan. He attended F.J. Brennan High School across the river in Windsor where he graduated with honors, was named Athlete of the Year, and was selected to the All-City Football team.
Jim obtained his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the University of Windsor in 1974. Throughout his professional life he has maintained an avid interest in science. As the practice of law has become more and more dependent on technology, Jim’s expertise in this regard has served him well. The discovery/disclosure provided by the State in all criminal cases is now almost always in digital form. Witness statements are audio and often video recorded and delivered as files on CD/DVD or through an internet portal. Being computer literate allows for the efficient and economical storage, review and access to this information in furtherance of developing a thorough and persuasive defense strategy.
Jim obtained his Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto in 1977. You can learn about this institution at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgoode_Hall_Law_School. While there he was actively involved in the Community and Legal Assistance Program (CLASP) providing pro bono legal services to indigent clients. He also completed the Intensive Criminal Law Program. As was required by local admission rules at the time, Jim interned for a year with the late Frank Montello, Q.C. (Queen's Counsel) who was widely regarded as one of the pre-eminent criminal defense attorneys in the country.
In April of 1979 Jim was called to the Bar by the Law Society as a barrister.
Jim attended the University of Detroit Mercy
School of Law in his hometown and graduated with a
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in May of 1987. He was
admitted to The Florida Bar in 1988.
As an assistant public defender in Charlotte County
for three years Jim handled a large felony docket and
defended approximately 2000 clients. He then
moved to the Lee County office where he was a felony
track supervisor.
In private practice Jim has focused his efforts
primarily on the defense of serious felony charges.
He accepts private clients and is also on the Judge’s
Registry for the 20th Judicial Circuit from which he
is appointed to represent indigent clients in conflict
cases.
Jim is also admitted to practice in Federal Court
in both the Middle and Southern Districts and is a
member of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.
Jim holds a private pilot's license and is an avid
cyclist and golfer and can often be seen out and about riding his Harley softail.
Jim lives in Cape Coral.
